12 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Central Indiana

August 10, 2025 Sheldon

The insider knowledge that makes the transition smoother

When I talk to people who are considering a move to Central Indiana, they usually have two questions: "What's it really like?" and "What should I know before I get there?" Fair questions. Every area has its quirks, its hidden gems, and its learning curves. Here are 12 things I wish someone had told me.

1. The Roundabouts Are Real

Carmel alone has over 150 roundabouts, more than any city in the country. If you've never driven through one, your first week might feel like a NASCAR tryout. But give it a month and you'll wonder why every city doesn't have them. They keep traffic moving, reduce accidents, and honestly, they're kind of fun once you get the hang of it.

2. Property Taxes Are Lower Than You Think

If you're coming from the coasts or the Midwest states with higher tax burdens, Indiana's property taxes may surprise you in a good way. Just make sure you understand the homestead exemption, it can save you a meaningful amount each year on your primary residence. Your agent or a local tax professional can walk you through it.

3. You Will Need a Car

Public transit exists, but it's limited. Central Indiana is built around cars. The good news is that traffic is manageable compared to most metros, parking is plentiful, and your commute will probably be shorter than whatever you're used to.

4. The Food Scene Is Way More Diverse Than You Expect

This is the one that catches everyone off guard. We have 35+ international cuisines represented within a 30-minute drive. Jamaican, Ethiopian, Burmese, Salvadoran, Vietnamese, Brazilian, and that's just the start. I built a whole guide around it because I couldn't believe how much variety is here.

5. Winters Are Real, But Manageable

Yes, it snows. Yes, it gets cold. But Central Indiana winters are nothing like Minnesota or upstate New York. You'll need a good coat and some patience, but spring and fall more than make up for it. The fall foliage along the Monon Trail is worth the wait.

6. The School Systems Are a Genuine Differentiator

Carmel Clay Schools, Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield Washington, Noblesville Schools, these are some of the highest-rated districts in the state. If you have kids or plan to, the quality of education here is a legitimate reason people choose this area over others.

7. Cost of Living Lets You Actually Enjoy Your Income

Your dollar goes further here. Housing, groceries, dining, entertainment, it all costs less than most comparable metros. That means more room in your budget for the things that matter to you, whether that's travel, savings, or just not stressing about money.

8. People Are Genuinely Friendly

It's not a stereotype. Your neighbors will introduce themselves. People wave. The barista remembers your order. It might feel unusual at first if you're coming from a bigger city, but most people tell me it's one of their favorite things about living here.

9. Carmel's Arts and Design District Is Not What You Picture

When people hear "Indiana," they don't usually picture an upscale arts district with galleries, boutiques, and farm-to-table restaurants. But that's exactly what you'll find on Main Street in Carmel. Midtown, the Palladium, Center for the Performing Arts, it's a cultural scene that rivals cities three times this size.

10. Healthcare Access Is Strong

IU Health, Ascension St. Vincent, and Community Health Network all have major facilities throughout the area. You won't have to drive far for quality care, and specialists are well represented across Hamilton County.

11. Weekend Getaways Are Easy

Chicago is about three hours north. Louisville and Cincinnati are each about two hours away. Nashville, Tennessee is a manageable day's drive. Indianapolis is centrally located enough that road trips feel effortless, and the airport offers direct flights to most major cities.

12. The Housing Market Moves Fast

Don't wait to get pre-approved. In sought-after neighborhoods, well-priced homes can go under contract within days. Having your financing in order before you start touring puts you in a much stronger position when the right home comes along.

Ready to Make the Move?

Central Indiana has a way of surprising people, in the best way possible. If you're thinking about relocating, I'd love to help you explore the area and find the right fit for your family.
