You Don't Need a Passport to Eat Around the World in Central Indiana

April 12, 2026 Sheldon

35 countries. 96+ restaurants. All within a 30 minute drive.

One of the things I love about living in Central Indiana is the food. Not the chain restaurants along the highway. I'm talking about the hidden gems, the family-owned spots, and the places that make you feel like you just landed in another country.

When people ask me what surprised me most about this area, the answer is always the same: the diversity. We have 35+ international cuisines represented within a 30 minute drive. That's Jamaican jerk chicken on a Tuesday, Brazilian churrasco on a Friday, and Vietnamese pho on a lazy Sunday. All without leaving the metro.

A Few of My Personal Favorites

YASO Jamaican Grill. This Fountain Square spot is my go-to. The jerk chicken, the curry goat, the oxtails. Every dish is made with intention. If you haven't been, you're missing out.

Texas Roadhouse. I know, I know. It's a chain. But sometimes you want a hand-cut steak, fresh rolls with cinnamon butter, and zero pretension. It's comfort food done right, and I'm not ashamed to say I love it.

Fogo de Chao. When you want to celebrate or impress someone from out of town, this downtown churrascaria delivers. The continuous tableside carving experience is something everyone should try at least once.

The Real Story Behind the Food

But those are just three out of nearly a hundred restaurants I've been cataloging. From Ethiopian injera on West 38th Street to Burmese noodle soups on Madison Ave to Salvadoran pupuserias on Michigan Road. Central Indiana's food scene tells the story of the people who call this place home.

That's why I built the Taste the World guide. A comprehensive directory of 35 countries and 96+ restaurants, all right here in our backyard. Whether you're relocating and want to know what's here, or you've lived here for years and want to try something new, it's a resource I'm proud to share.
